Drip Irrigation Tubing and Emitters

Drip delivers water slowly at the roots. Here is how tubing, emitters, filters and regulators fit together.

Drip irrigation is made of simple parts that must work together: a valve, a filter, a pressure regulator, a main line of solid tubing and either emitters punched into the line or tubing with emitters built in. Water drips slowly at the root zone of each plant. There is no spray to blow away, almost no evaporation and the leaves stay dry. For beds, shrubs, trees and gardens, it is the most efficient choice.

Design decisions are about plants and flow. Large shrubs and trees need several emitters or a ring of tubing, small perennials need one or two and vegetables are often best on inline drip tubing along the row. Every zone has a limit on how much tubing and how many emitters it can support, so we calculate flow. Filters keep emitters clear, regulators protect fittings and an end flush valve allows debris to be flushed out.

Questions

Drip Tubing and Emitters FAQ

How many emitters does a shrub need?

It depends on size and type. Large shrubs often need several, and small ones one or two.

Does drip tubing need to be buried?

It is usually covered with mulch, not buried deeply, so it can be reached for service.

Why does drip need a regulator?

Drip works at low pressure, and high pressure pops fittings off and distorts emitters.
