Smart controllers adjust watering to weather and plant needs. Here is how they work and what to look for.
A smart controller is a sprinkler timer that connects to the internet. Instead of running a fixed schedule, it uses weather data, such as rainfall, temperature and sometimes wind and sunlight, along with what it knows about each zone, to adjust or skip watering. Many have phone apps, alerts and usage reports, and some work with flow sensors to detect leaks.
A smart controller is only as smart as its setup. Zones must be entered with the right plant type, head type, soil and slope, and the heads must apply water evenly. If a zone has a broken head or poor coverage, the controller cannot see it. We install controllers with proper wiring and sensors, enter the settings carefully and leave a fallback schedule in case the internet goes down.
