Sprinkler Zone Planner: How Many Zones Do I Need?

Enter your lawn and bed areas, head type and water flow to see how many heads and zones a sprinkler system may need.

These tools give planning-level estimates from typical values and the details you enter. They are not quotes, designs or engineering, and results depend on your actual yard, soil, water pressure and flow, system condition, weather and local rules. Only a site visit can confirm what a project needs, and we give you a written scope and price before any work begins.

How it works

Four quick steps.

  1. 01

    Measure the areas

Lawn and bed areas in square feet, from a tape or a map.

  2. 02

    Enter your water

Flow in gallons per minute, from a bucket test or a meter reading.

  3. 03

    Pick the heads

Rotors for open lawn, sprays for small areas, or a mix.

  4. 04

    Read the plan

Heads, flow per zone and the number of zones to plan for.

Tips

  • Flow, not pressure, decides how many heads can run at once.
  • Put lawn, beds and shade on separate zones, because they need different amounts of water.
  • A bucket test at an outdoor spigot gives a quick estimate of flow.
Questions

About this tool.

How is the number of zones worked out?

It comes from the area to cover, the flow each head uses and the flow your supply can deliver at once.

How do I measure my flow?

Time how long a spigot takes to fill a five-gallon bucket. Five gallons divided by the seconds, times sixty, gives gallons per minute.

Can I mix rotors and sprays?

Yes, but on separate zones, because they apply water at different rates.

Is the answer exact?

No. It is a planning figure. A site visit and a flow test confirm it.
