Trees change how much water a yard needs and where it should go. Here is how to irrigate shade without drowning roots or wasting water.
Shade changes everything about watering. Grass under trees uses less water than grass in full sun, but trees themselves compete with the lawn for moisture, and their roots take what they can. Dense shade also keeps leaves damp, which invites fungus. Many wooded lots end up with a patchwork: dry soil under big trees, damp moss near the house and thin grass in between.
We handle shade with separate zones and different schedules. Sunny and shady areas are watered separately so neither is over or under watered. Beds and tree rings get drip or micro-sprays that deliver water at the roots without wetting foliage. Heads near trees are placed and trenches routed to avoid damaging major roots. We also suggest watering early in the morning so leaves dry quickly, and we talk through shade-tolerant grass choices that need less water.

Often yes, but trees compete for water. Separate zones let each area get what it needs.
Slowly and deeply with drip or a soaker ring set out from the trunk.
Avoid soaking the trunk. Water out toward the drip line, where feeder roots grow.
